Issues affecting people in the Middle East are of particular concern for Nadia Cavner, including the refugee crisis resulting from the ongoing Syrian civil war. Syrian refugees represent the world’s largest refugee population, which stands at over 5.6 million and continues to rise. There is so much we can do to help.
Humanitarian aid is critical for refugees, many of whom leave everything behind to escape the conflict. Safe environments for children and access to basics such as food, clothing, and shelter are among their greatest needs, in addition to health care and reliably clean water.
Here are a few ways that you can help Syrian refugees:
1. Donate to nonprofits and relief funds.
Monetary donations help nonprofit groups and relief funds provide essentials like clothing, food, housing necessities, and medicine, as well as to establish emergency-relief programs and trauma-care facilities. Consider organizations like ACERO (Assyrian Church of the East Relief Organization) or ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross).
2. Sponsor a child or giving to help children in need.
The Syrian civil war has had a dire effect on children, ranging from long-term psychological and physical trauma to risk of disease, malnutrition, and exploitation. Child sponsorships can improve their situation by ensuring that they receive medical care, nutritious food, and adequate shelter, among other needs. Organizations like ACERO and UNICEF directly help families and children in need, and organizations like World Vision help by providing individual sponsorships for children.
3. Become an advocate or join a coalition.
If you’re interested in more direct involvement, consider engaging in advocacy efforts for increasing government support and resettlement and humanitarian-aid programs. You can also participate in outreach for heightening public understanding or join coalitions dedicated to promoting acceptance and respect for Syrian refugees. Consider starting small by sharing/retweeting occasional updates from ACERO and other news organizations about developments in Syria.
4. Leverage your personal and professional skills.
Another hands-on approach is utilizing your personal or professional skills to help refugees. For example, practicing attorneys and law students may be able to help navigate complex immigration-status laws. Consider contacting organizations like USAID or other NGO’s for more information on how you can donate your time and/or skills.
