What could US war with Iran mean for Syria?

As of March 4, 2026, the United States is currently engaged in a direct and intensifying war with Iran, but its strategy toward Syria has shifted toward withdrawal rather than expansion. While the U.S. continues to strike Iranian-linked targets across the region, its military footprint in Syria is being rapidly reduced in favor of a new diplomatic partnership with the post-Assad transitional government.

A Strategic Pivot: From Confrontation to Withdrawal

Despite the ongoing regional conflagration with Tehran, the U.S. is not currently targeting the Syrian state. Instead, the Trump administration has implemented a policy of “robust but conditional support” for Syria’s new transitional government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

  • Troop Withdrawal: In February 2026, President Trump ordered the complete withdrawal of the remaining ~1,000 U.S. forces from Syria, a process expected to conclude by April 2026.
  • Base Handovers: Key outposts, including the al-Tanf garrison and bases in the northeast, have already been handed over to Syrian authorities.
  • New Alliances: The U.S. has shifted from viewing Damascus as an Iranian proxy to a partner in counter-terrorism, supporting the integration of Kurdish-led forces into the national Syrian army.

Syria’s Role in the Iran-U.S. War

While the U.S. is not targeting the Syrian government, Syria remains a secondary theater for the broader conflict with Iran:

  • Degrading Proxies: The U.S. and Israel continue to strike Iranian-backed militias and IRGC infrastructure within Syrian territory to prevent retaliatory attacks.
  • Iranian Expulsion: Following the fall of the Assad regime in late 2024, the new Syrian government reportedly banned Iranians from entering the country and maintains that no Iranian forces remain on its soil.
  • Counter-ISIS Operations: Independent of the Iran conflict, the U.S. launched Operation Hawkeye Strike in early 2026, a series of retaliatory airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria following the killing of American service members in Palmyra.

Current Conflict Status (March 4, 2026)

The war with Iran has escalated significantly in the last 48 hours, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stating the U.S. is “just getting started”.

  • Direct Strikes: Joint U.S.-Israeli operations have targeted Tehran, Esfahan, and Iranian naval assets, including the sinking of an Iranian warship by a U.S. submarine.
  • Leadership Casualties: Recent strikes killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28, 2026, triggering widespread retaliatory attacks from Iran against U.S. diplomatic and military sites in the Gulf.
  • Syrian Neutrality: So far, the Sharaa government has remained largely detached from the direct U.S.-Iran hostilities, focusing instead on its own internal transition and securing its borders from ISIS remnants.
